'Rey Skywalker' (Upcoming live action motion picture) - general discussion thread

Hopefully it is great, yes I agree. I suppose the larger problem is that they’re not talking about the movie itself… because it probably won’t be anything new. There will be a rise and a fall, new disciples, new powers, some evil galaxy scale threat, whatever. Will another three films actually have any material worth seeing? The last three didn’t for the most part. When will Star Wars have relevance again? This generation have had the MCU instead. I mentioned GOTGV3 before not only as a financial success but as a sci-fi trilogy I felt was actually worth seeing all the way through. Problem is now the wheels have fallen off all the Disney owned franchises so where else is there to go…

Well it’s one thing to find inspiration in real life, but it’s another to bring that into a blockbuster franchise. Maybe she should have talked about how things she’s seen in the real world will help bring back depth and humanity to a series mired in lacklustre characterisation and shallow themes? Will the realism of documentaries be combined with the fantasy of Star Wars? I have no idea because that didn’t get addressed, as did any reason for her being hired.

Talking about herself so much just makes it seem as though the project at hand is a secondary concern. It looks as though all the films being produced have enough PR already if there are that many being made, I don’t understand the relevance. You’re selling out and signing your soul away to a mega-corp after all, like so many independent film-makers have done before (whether their movies actually made or not). It’s not some grand philanthropic endeavour.

Disney has a few options, regardless of your opinion on the political soapbox stuff that seems to come around any time somebody employed by them starts talking. One the one hand they should probably just be quiet.

Time works wonders for things like this, and in a few years there will probably be people clamouring to return to the saga. Some parts of the audience will develop total apathy, others will start getting nostalgic. So regardless of whether any of this is a good idea simply getting on with a project quietly should be their first priority. Announcing stuff, making a big fuss, then firing people and shifting it all around makes them look weak and foolish.

On the other hand they need to take action to improve their brand. The TV shows outside Andor have been a total mess in terms of tone and quality. A course correction based on The Rise of Skywalker is probably a bad idea. But if they’re going to do it, they should get on with it. Who is directing something, who is writing it, who cares. It’s STAR WARS. They need to get back into their heads what that actually means and deliver some decent output.

Behind the scenes they’re probably panicking because their only hit recently was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, the final note for a series that is essentially done despite all the filler post Avengers: Endgame. If their goal is to make money then they’re running out of people who are willing to spend any. Why they’re wasting time with all this talk is baffling. But then again so is most of their decision making in the past five years.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing Daisy Ridley’s new #StarWars movie about Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order. She’s the first woman to direct a “Star Wars” movie and says “it’s about time.”

“I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special. We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”

Which Star Wars characters can be compared to Arthurian characters? Are Luke and Anakin similar to Arthur and Lancelot?
Time

There’s not much to go on beyond basic hero’s journey stuff, unless you consider TLJ to be part of the rise/fall/rise cycle of the Excalibur/Lightsaber story. But since Ben Solo isn’t Luke’s child it doesn’t really fit in the usual sense. There are other vague parallels but the prequels decided to go with politics instead of magic and myth. A lot lot missed opportunities all round.

Names matter
Time

That’s really interesting, as I remember the “A New Hope” name being a thing, but looking at the 1995 artwork for the Obi-wan/THX edition it’s only on the spine as a smaller subtitle. I guess it’s become habit, like how EPISODE ONE was everywhere instead of the movie name back in the day.

Were the Jedi supposed to not be allowed to get married, have children or any possessions when the OT was made?
Time

Obi-wan says that Anakin was a good friend… and doesn’t mention any kind of rule breaking by having a child. The idea of the dark side giving easier access to strength and power is one thing, but linking it to romance is a bizarre later addition. In fact all the OT discussion of the Force relates to things like a lust for action and excitement, in opposition to the peaceful zen-like themes of the Jedi way. What does not having friends and family have to do with being a good Guardian of the Republic?

I get the feeling that George mis-remembered ESB and the scene where Yoda tells Luke not to risk the future by running off to save his friends. Surely if attachment was a no-no then Luke would have a problem rescuing Vader? Isn’t being sad and trying to get him back against the Jedi way? I get that it wasn’t fleshed out until later but the PT stuff is ridiculous, and often contradicts itself anyway.

Ahsoka (live action series) - general discussion thread
Time

I was thinking back to how Mando season one felt like so well done at the time, compared to how things have unravelled now. So much in Ahsoka is tell not show. Whereas Din barely speaks so you have great moments like the Super Battle Droid attack or that scene where the probes search the fires on Mandalore. Where the hell was that stuff here, in show heavily relying on a series of past events to lend it drama? Where was Sabine’s family or her decision to become a Jedi? By comparison the Clone Wars flashback was clunky and cheap looking, with each setting and time period being the same orange smog.
